Jackpot winners and more lottery tickets

Most winners of jackpots usually only bought one ticket or a few at most. Buying a lot of tickets does not increase your chances of winning jackpots by much at all.

Playing a number grouping

For whatever unknown reason, if six numbers are drawn in a lottery game, the numbers that come out are usually never from the same number group. This also applies to five numbers drawn. An example with six numbers drawn is 30, 32, 33, 34, 36, 39. Playing all 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and so on, is never usually a good idea. Most all of the time, the numbers that are drawn are from a few different number groupings. The only benefit is that if all 30s are drawn, and you have them, you will most likely not split the jackpot with many if any others at all, since most people play lower numbers from 31 and under.

Playing birthday numbers

Playing lower numbers, birthday numbers from 1-31, are the same as any other numbers. Over time, all numbers come out in most nearly equal amounts. You will have the same chance with higher numbers also.

Same money bigger drawings

More money spent on a lottery drawing because the jackpot is bigger does not increase your odds by much at all. An extra dollar maybe, but much more is still not worth it.

Get in new instant games early

See when a new instant game (scratch-off game) is released. The most jackpot prizes are available before anyone starts winning them.

Lower numbers played more

Lower numbers in all lottery games are probably played more. These include numbers from 31 and under. This is because people play birthday dates. Numbers over 31 are most likely played less. If you do win a cash prize with lower numbers, it will probably pay less on most all prize levels and the jackpot will be split.

Instant games to play

The first factor in deciding what instant game (scratch-off game) to play is the money available to play. Choose the level of money you wish to spend on an instant game. Be sure to see how many jackpots are still available for those games under that money amount, instant games unclaimed prizes. Once you choose a dollar amount, say a $1 instant game, the prizes for different instant games under that dollar amount will vary. Some $1 instant games may have a $500 top prize while others may have a $2,500 top prize. It may be best sometimes to go for the smaller $500 top prize game if more jackpots are available for that game over the $2,500 game.

Lower and higher odds lottery game

A good strategy is to play one lower odds lottery game and one higher odds game each time you play. The lower odds lottery game should have free tickets or a small dollar amount for the lowest prize and a cash or bigger cash prize to win above that level. These jackpots are easier to hit than other lottery games and probably pay under $100,000. The higher odds lottery game should have prizes over a half a million or million. This strategy helps keep some free tickets and lowest cash prizes coming in every so often, since the odds are much lower, while you still have a chance to win a big or million dollar jackpot.

Expect not to win

It is best to expect that you will never win any prize. This helps the frustration of not winning anything for long periods of time. It is always best to play with low expectations until and if you actually do win a big prize.

Lottery odds and horse racing

If you have 20 horses in a race, and you play 1 of them, chances are you will lose. But if you play 2 or 3 of them, you will probably still lose. If you played 9 of the 20, you would still probably lose. To have odds in your favor, you would need to play at least 11 of the 20 horses. This is why spending more than $1 or $2 on lottery tickets for any one drawing does not work. Spending $10 on one drawing does nothing to increase your odds, since they are so high to begin with. You would need to cover more than half of the lottery combinations to have odds in your favor. It is always best to play the smallest amount in any lottery drawing, with $1 or $2 at the most.

Once a week or yearly

If you have $52 for the year to play, it would be better to play $1, 52 different times rather than $52 on just one drawing. One reason is that the one drawing you play may have numbers come out that you don't have at all. If you have numbers all below 20, and all the numbers that came out that night are above 20, everything is a loss. Over many drawings, most numbers will probably hit several times, giving you a chance that some of your numbers will be drawn several times.

Buying more tickets usually does not work

Spending more than $1 or $2 on a lottery game for that drawing usually does not work to increase your chances of winning a big prize. You may though win more smaller prizes, like free tickets. It doesn't work because the odds are too high. An extra few tickets has little impact on lowering the odds. I have tried both over the years. Sometimes spending $10 on a lottery game on one weekend, other weekends just $1 or $2. I actually won a bigger prize on the $2 weekend play than the $10 worth of tickets, which all lost.

Instant games unclaimed prizes

A giant tip for playing instant lottery games (scratch-off games), is to know how many top prizes are still out there not yet claimed, even the second prizes as well. This information should be on the states lottery website and be updated often. If you want to buy a $1 instant game, and have a selection of six that your state offers, get the $1 instant game that has the most top prizes still unclaimed. If one of them has only five left, and the other has 35, you have a better chance of winning the jackpot with the instant game with the 35 unclaimed. Never buy instant games without knowing this information ahead of time.

Instant lottery games

One advantage of instant lottery games (scratch-off games) is that you get to play as soon as you buy them. They are good to give for birthday gifts, holidays, and other special occasions. They are also fun to play, since they come in a variety of different games. The instant lottery games come in all dollar amounts, from $1 to over $20. The higher priced cards have higher prizes, with some in the millions, but the biggest prizes are never as big as the national lottery games, which can get into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Double check tickets

Always make sure you double check your lottery tickets. This especially applies when you think you won. The shock if you win a big prize usually makes you check several times anyway. But also double check if you think you lost, to be sure you didn't miss anything.

Hundreds of millions of dollar jackpots

These huge jackpots increase ticket sales to a sky high level. On the games that have very high odds of winning, it is probably best to play these ones only when the jackpot is very, very high. This happens when nobody wins the jackpot for several weeks or even months. I have used a figure of near $500 million for the national jackpots when a $1 or $2 ticket seems to be worth it at that point, otherwise I play just the state lottery games with lower odds.

Feeling when you win the lottery

The odds are high, but when you do win the jackpot or a high second prize, it does feel strange as you check your numbers and you see most all or all have matched. I have won two big prizes, in the hundreds, so far since I have played.

Playing a variety of lottery games

Playing different lottery games all the time can help break up the boredom of just sticking with one game all the time. It is like learning languages. If you study a few of them at once, you can take a break from one so you don't get tired of it. You are still learning a language. In the lottery, you are still in the game, but just making it more interesting.

Chess and lotteries

How is it is possible that people win the lottery when the odds are so high? The lottery is like chess. Sometimes a lower rated player makes great moves and gives a higher rated player some problems. Sometimes the lower rated player may draw, or even win the match. He makes lucky moves that are also combined with some skill. Being in the right place at the right time and buying a lottery ticket also happens. And playing smarter by using lottery tips also helps.

The free ticket

Winning a free ticket in a lottery is still valuable. Assuming a $1 a game to play, you are getting $1 worth of tickets for free. Some of these free tickets may win cash prizes, so it is always important to cash them in. Many people have won jackpots from cashing in their free ticket.

Time of year to play lotteries

It would seem during the warmer months, since more people are out, more are also playing the lotteries. In the colder times of the year, with less people out, lesser people are playing. This will effect the jackpots.

If you do win a jackpot in any game in the warmer months, there is a higher chance that you will wind up sharing the prize money with others. This won't effect bigger jackpots in the millions though very much, since you would still be getting a lot of money even if you have to share the top prize with other winners. But the lower jackpots under $100,000, if won by several winners, may get you far less money.

Note though that in the lottery games where the jackpot carries over each drawing if nobody wins, it may be helpful for more people to be playing so the jackpot will grow larger when nobody wins for several drawings. Money from ticket sales as the jackpot gets higher may also increase the jackpot prize.
